Selfie queens! Capture is a club that encourages the use of photography to explore issues of identity, social awareness, and activism. Each week students are given a new photo challenge to not only understand the technicality of photography, but to also experiment with different types of subject matter.

with Ms. Odylle Learn killer dance moves and the art of choreography. We study dances from iconic music videos of the 80’s to the present as a way to understand how the choreography made them amazing. Students choreograph original dances and perform them before a live audience.

You don’t need to be athletic or outspoken to enjoy different sports, build your physical strength or growing more courageous. All you need to do is join this club. We will challenge ourselves with fitness challenges and outdoor adventures. At the end of the semester, you will feel stronger physically and mentally and ready to take on bigger and better goals.

What’s Hip Hop’s original dance? If you said breaking or breakdancing, you’re right. In this club, you’ll learn the history and basics of this dance loved and practiced across the globe. We’re going to get down on the floor to master shuffles, freezes, kicks, and, of course, spins.

Just because we are in the city doesn’t mean we can’t grow our own food. Learn to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers in an urban garden. We will grow plants from seed to food while also learning how to incorporate the plants into our daily diets.

To be a DJ is to be the true life of the party. Find your inner DJ persona on the digital turntables.  Learn the art of DJing by getting a music education in mixing, beat making, entrepreneurship and crafting your own mixtape.

 ​Have you always wanted be in a music videos? Do you love to dance? We will be learning dances from music videos of the 80’s to the 21st century. Find out what it takes for those dances to be created and learn to create one yourself!

Hula hooping is a great workout for the mind and body. Similar to other forms of dance, hula hooping takes rhythm, coordination and technique. Give the hoop a spin and find your flow in the circle.

In Our Hands teaches girls about community and how to be a leader through urban planning. In this club, we learn the legacy of advocacy through other inspirational female leaders.

This is for all artists who have specific projects they would like to work on. Whether you create your work by hand or via computer, you will have time and support to get it done. At the end of the club, you will have a portfolio of original work and an opportunity to display in an exhibition just like a professional.

Not only is learning another language fun, it’s a skill that brings so many wonderful opportunities from seeing other parts of the world or building a fantastic career. In this club, you will explore not only explore this beautiful language, but also Italian culture and media.

Learn several relaxations skills to add to your anti-stress toolbox. Learn about the mind-body connection, how to strengthen it to empower yourself, and yes, love your body. When test time comes, you’ll be focused and confident.

Love to debate? Want to become a powerful speaker whose arguments command respect, help reach life goals and even change people’s hearts and minds about important issues? This is the club for natural presenters or those who want to become better speakers.

Middle school can be a stressful time in a girl’s life. In this yoga and meditation club, learn relaxations skills to develop anti-stress tools. Learn about the mind-body connection, how to strengthen it to empower yourself, and yes, love your body.

It’s a dangerous myth that girls cannot excel in science and math especially since those are fields that make for exciting, well-paying careers. You will have blast doing hands-on activities in a variety sciences from food to space.

In this club, you will do all these things plus some exciting experiments, and you don’t have to be a science whiz to join. You just might become one when it’s over.

Ms. Chantell- born & raised in Harlem-- the best place in the World. I attended Syracuse University, where my life was changed, and my love of travel developed after studying abroad in Madrid. When I am not a Girls Inc., I enjoy yoga, blogging, reading, and hanging out with friends.

Ms. Danielle--I am a former competitive soccer player, current marathon runner and proud member of both New York Road Runners and Front Runners New York--the city’s premier running squad for LGBTQ athletes. I have a Masters in Human Rights from Columbia University, specializing in Gender Identity and Sexual Politics. I’m a feminist, a Broadway fanatic, an adventure lover, an avid reader, a museum nerd, and a vegan of over 8 years.

Ms. Caroline--I was born in Puerto Rico and I’m a world traveler. I’ve lived in several major cities of the world, including London, Florence, Chicago, and San Francisco. When not at Girls Inc., I love to read YA books (I love The Hunger Games and Harry Potter!), I listen to a lot of Ted-Talks, see a lot of shows, travel out of state, and write children’s books.

Ms. Arvolyn--I am a Journalist, DJ, hoop dancer and herbalist in training. I was born in Brooklyn but raised on a farm in Kent, CT. I studied Pan African Studies and Creative Writing at Drew University. Since college I have worked as a reporter for several print and online newspapers. I enjoy spending time in nature, dancing, traveling and making hula hoops and dreamcatchers.

Ms. Odylle--I’m from Brooklyn, and I have been dancing for twenty years. I started with ballet when I was eight years old and eventually found my way to breaking. When I’m not at Girls Inc. I’m teaching dance at a studio in Brooklyn. I also perform with a Hip Hop theater company called Full Circle Soul Productions.

Ms. Patrice--I was born in Brooklyn and raised by a strong Caribbean household. I always loved to draw–it was something innate. I received my BA in Studio Art at Wellesley College and my MA in Art & Design Ed. from RISD. I've participated in many contests, exhibitions, and presentations and my work centers around ancestry, culture, society, and self-awareness. When not at Girls Inc., I enjoy spending time with family & friends, creating, reading, or just having a good laugh.

Ms. Nati--Born in Brooklyn and raised in both coasts, I am of Argentine Mexican and Jewish descent. I received my Bachelors of Science degree from Roosevelt University, with an emphasis in biochemistry. I am pursuing another Bachelors of Science in clinical science to run my own laboratory and help find the cure for ALS. I have always loved science in school and found a way to make a career in a field I am quite passionate about.

 

Ms. Chantal--I was born in the Bronx and raised in Spanish Harlem. I received my Bachelors of Science from Nyack College where I studied Youth & Family Studies. I am passionate about fashion, social justice, healthy living and helping girls thrive! When I’m not at Girls Inc., I’m spending time with my kids and husband, working on my first book, designing accessories for my Etsy shop or studying to become a Doula!

Ms. Sofia-- I was born in the Bronx and have lived here all my life. I am the Program Director of the Girls Inc after school programs at TWYLS-Bronx. When not at Girls Inc, I love to read and write books, especially for young people. In fact, I’ve written two YA novels so far - Efrain’s Secret and Show and Prove. To relax I also enjoy swimming as a form of meditation, watching movies, exploring the city, and producing feminist media

Ms. Krystal--I was raised in Coney Island, Brooklyn, along with my three sisters and brother. I am currently pursuing a degree in Human Services. I love to learn. I love to teach. I love helping individuals and families in need to achieve the stability they desire. When I am not at Girls Inc., I am mentoring, volunteering, feeding my creative spirit with art, and spending time with those near and dear to my heart. If I ruled the world, people would not face discrimination or harm for how they choose to show themselves to the world.
